Feature Friday – Mock Meat by Oumph!

Welcome to the very first ‘Feature Friday’ where once a month, I’ll be reviewing a vegan product that I’ve recently tried. New products are being developed and sold left right and centre but it’s hard to know where to start and how to go about separating the good from the not-so-good! Hopefully, these reviews will help you discover some incredible new food, products, clothing and more.

This month, I heard about a new vegan brand called Oumph! They sell a range of mock meats that are made out of soya protein. So far, I’ve been able to get my hands on and try two different types: ‘The Chunk’ and ‘Pulled Oumph!’. But, as far as I’m aware, their range currently consists of eight different options (four of which are available in the UK). Don’t worry, I’ve already got my sights on the others…

First things first: I love their packaging. Now, I know that doesn’t have any impact on the actual product, but it’s certainly appealing. Before I get into the taste and texture of the food itself, it’s worth mentioning that the brand Oumph! has developed these mock meats with the climate in mind, thanks to their use of soy beans which are resource efficient. This also means that their products are high in protein and fibre as well as being a good source of iron and folic acid.

Ok, let’s get into the food itself…

Pulled Oumph!


I’m going to start with this one because, hands down, it was my favourite out of the two!

FLAVOUR – overall, the flavour was really good. The meaty chunks came in a BBQ sauce which had a good, strong taste to it. Because of the sauce, the Pulled Oumph! tasted really quite tender and juicy.

TEXTURE – I thought that the texture was really good; it reminded me of seitan because it was quite chewy. I can imagine that some people might find it a little tough but, for me, it was the ideal kind of texture. When something is a bit chewy, it feels more substantial and satisfying.

COOKING TIME – they are super quick to cook – you can fry them in a little oil either from frozen or once thawed. They only take about 5 minutes or so which makes them a great addition to meals that you want done in a hurry.

RECIPE IDEAS – we had the Pulled Oumph! in wraps with some chilli beans and vegetables. I thought it worked really well but something like tacos with vegan cheese may work better. These would probably taste great as a pizza topping, too!

OVERALL IMPRESSION – I absolutely loved this and would definitely get it again. It is a touch on the pricey side at £3.50 for a bag (obviously this may vary depending on where you get it) but I’d say it’s worth the money, especially as this isn’t the kind of thing you’d be having every day.

The Chunk



Since writing the review below, I’ve since done a whole LOT of recipe testing with ‘The Chunk’. And I can honestly say that this is now my favourite Oumph! product (that’s a pretty big deal, guys). In my first review, I mentioned that a stir fry would be perfect for this kind of product – and that’s so true! The Chunk works beautifully in a whole variety of stir fry dishes, curries and more. Get the sauce right and this meat alternative will carry it so well. The satisfying texture is perfect, too. So, don’t disregard the below review but just bear in mind, to an extent, this product is what you make it!

Next up is the rather satisfyingly-named ‘The Chunk’. It’s very similar to the above ‘Pulled Oumph!’ only, well, a little less flavoursome…

FLAVOUR – based on the delicious barbecue flavour of the other product we tried, I assumed this would be equally as delicious. But unfortunately, for me anyway, the flavour let it down. I added some salt and pepper which jazzed it up a little but I think for this to really work, it would need some kind of sauce.

TEXTURE – same as the ‘Pulled Oumph!’. Good, chewy and satisfying texture. No complaints on that front!

COOKING TIME – again, same cooking time as mentioned earlier. Super quick and super easy.

RECIPE IDEAS – based on my comments regarding the flavour, I think this meat alternative would work best in something like a stir-fry. A rich, salty sauce would give ‘The Chunk’ a real boost and I think that could transform it completely. Another idea might be to shred the cooked ‘meat’ and then add it to a tomato sauce for pasta or risotto.

OVERALL IMPRESSION – I did feel that the flavour was lacking but I definitely need to try it out in some other recipes before I can make a true assessment. As with the ‘Pulled Oumph!’, I really liked the texture and it was so speedy to cook which I thought was great. I won’t be rushing back to the supermarket to get this product again, but I’m definitely looking forward to trying the others in the range.

    The Pure chunk is unseasoned, you spice it up yourself.. 🙂

    We love it just because of that.. Using it in all types of recipes. From Stews to battered “fish” like texture.. (just boiling the product for a few minutes and then put batter on)..
